How to Translate YouTube Videos on Android and iPhone

On a desktop you can install a browser extension. On a phone you cannot, so how to translate YouTube videos on Android or iPhone comes down to two things: what the YouTube app itself offers, and which dedicated YouTube translator app you can use. Here is what actually works in 2026.

Option 1: YouTube app captions (Android and iPhone)

The YouTube mobile app can translate captions when the video already has them:

  1. Tap the video, then the gear icon in the top right.
  2. Tap Captions.
  3. If a track exists, tap Auto-translate and pick your language.

Limits: no audio, only text; and it only works when captions were uploaded or auto-generated. Many videos, especially in languages other than English, have neither.

Option 2: Translate YouTube videos on Android with AI dubbing

The TranslateTube Android app translates the speech itself, so it works on videos without captions and gives you a dubbed voice instead of text:

  1. Install TranslateTube from Google Play.
  2. In the YouTube app, tap Share on a video and choose TranslateTube, or paste the link into the app.
  3. Pick the target language, for example English, and choose dubbing, subtitles, or both.
  4. Press play. The translated voice plays in sync with the video.

Useful details:

  • Works with videos that have no subtitles or CC, because the audio is recognized first.
  • Free to use with a standard voice; Premium unlocks high-quality voices.
  • One subscription for phone and desktop: if you also use the Chrome extension, Premium is shared. Pay once, it unlocks in both.

Option 3: iPhone

There is no TranslateTube iOS app yet, so on iPhone the options today are:

  • YouTube app captions with auto-translate (see Option 1).
  • Watching on a desktop browser with the Chrome extension when you are at a computer.
  • Translating the transcript: copy the video transcript from YouTube on the web and paste it into a translation app. Slow, but works for short videos.

If an iOS version becomes available it will be announced on the TranslateTube home page. Until then, the Android app and the Chrome extension are the supported ways to get AI dubbing.

Tips for translating videos on a phone

  • Use headphones when the dubbed voice and the original audio overlap in a noisy place.
  • Wi-Fi first: speech recognition and dubbing stream data; long videos on mobile data can add up.
  • Short clips first: try a two-minute video to pick the voice and subtitle style you like before a one-hour lecture.
