How to Translate a Spanish Video to English (Subtitles or AI Voice)

Spanish is the second most common language on YouTube, so “how to translate a video from Spanish to English” is one of the most searched translation questions. The good news: Spanish is also one of the best-recognized languages by AI, so translation quality is high. Here are three ways, from free text to full English dubbing.

Method 1: YouTube auto-translate (free, text only)

Works when the video already has Spanish captions, uploaded or auto-generated:

  1. Click the gear icon in the YouTube player.
  2. Choose Subtitles/CC → Spanish.
  3. Click Auto-translate → English.

You will get English subtitles. Accuracy depends on the Spanish captions: auto-generated ones handle clear speech well and struggle with fast dialogue and regional slang.

Method 2: AI dubbing, hear the video in English

If you would rather listen than read, or the video has no captions, use TranslateTube:

  1. Install the Chrome extension or the Android app.
  2. Open the Spanish video and pick English as the target language.
  3. Turn on voice dubbing, choose a male or female voice, and press play.

The speech is recognized directly from the audio, translated, and spoken by an AI voice in sync with the video. English subtitles can run at the same time. This is the only method that works on Spanish videos without captions, which is common for interviews, vlogs and lectures from Latin America and Spain.

Method 3: Spanish video that is not on YouTube

For a Spanish video on another site or a file on your device, upload it to YouTube as unlisted (if you have the right to) and use Method 2. Otherwise transcribe the audio with a speech-to-text tool and paste the Spanish text into a translator. Details in how to translate a video.

Tips specific to Spanish

  • Accents and speed. Recognition is excellent for Castilian and neutral Latin American Spanish; very fast Caribbean speech or heavy slang lowers accuracy. Subtitles are more forgiving than dubbing in those cases.
  • Mixed Spanish and English. Videos that switch languages mid-sentence, common in US Latino content, confuse auto-captions. AI recognition handles them better.
  • Learning Spanish? Run subtitles in Spanish and dubbing in English, or the other way round, to follow both at once.
